E10 Fuel & Your Garden Machinery
What is E10 Fuel?
E10 fuel is a fuel made up of 90% regular petrol and 10% ethanol. This will become the standard fuel available on all petrol forecourts from 1st September 2021.
This change will not result in issues for the majority of road vehicles manufactured from 2011 onwards.
However, in small engine machinery which uses a carburettor, ethanol can damage the integrity of plastic and rubber, resulting in parts failing, higher running temperature, and poor reliability. The increase in levels of ethanol at the pump is expected to cause a rise in fuel-related issues in garden machinery, especially in machinery used infrequently.
Do not despair, there are several ways of avoiding damaging your small engines. There are ethanol free fuels and fuel treatments available to neutralise the ethanol within the E10 fuel that you buy at the pump.
